The activities of G3 are focused on the global unifying theme “Geodynamics, Georesources and Geomaterials and their contribution for an environmental, social and economically sustainable world”. The G3 relies on a structure with two vertical Thematic Domains and three transversal Thematic Lines (TL).

A - The Lithosphere Dynamics includes:

  • A1. Lithogeochemistry, deformation and metamorphic evolution of fold belts, with focus on the relationships between sedimentation, metamorphism, crustal melting and magmatism in orogenic contexts.
  • A2. Multidisciplinary studies on Variscan granitic rocks: depth profiles and 3D shape; isotopic geochemistry and geochronology, with integration of petrographic, whole-rock geochemical and mineralogical data and structural pattern of intrusion.
  • A3. Active Tectonics and Cenozoic evolution with focus on detail of the geomorphology of key-areas, with mapping and dating of selected fluvial terraces and planation surfaces.

B - The Geological Resources and Geomaterials includes:

  • B1. Structural control of mineralizations and geothermal sources;
  • B2. Mineralogy and fluid inclusion studies of ores and hydrothermal alterations;
  • B3. Rare elements and industrial minerals studies on pegmatites;
  • B4. Evaluation of mining waste as source of industrial minerals;
  • B5. Organic petrology and geochemistry for studies on: oil and gas-generation potential of sedimentary basins; technological and environmental research of coal and coal by-products (coal mine-wastes, fly ashes and C-based particles);
  • B6. Characterization of geologic materials: natural stones for architectural and civil engineering purposes; dam sediments for agriculture uses, aggregates for concrete, and, soils and sediments for forensic applications.

The established TL are:

  • TL1. Lithospheric Structure (LS);
  • TL2. Active tectonic and Seismic Hazard (ATSH);
  • TL3. Strategic metals in the Portuguese Variscan metallogenic belt (SMetals).
