ICT main bodies are:

• The Direction Board under the leadership of the general coordinator
• The Scientific Commission
• The Advisory Commission

ICT has four multidisciplinary research groups covering the major areas of Earth Sciences:

• G1 - Atmospheric Sciences, Instrumentation and Climate;
• G2 - Energy, Water, and Environment;
• G3 - Geodynamics, Georesources and Geomaterials;
• G4 - Geoconservation, Geoarchaeology, and Geoscience Education.

The research objectives of each Group are developed along Thematic Lines (TL) which are research programmes focused on a particular topic for the period 2014-20. TL research programmes take advantage of the multiple fields of expertise available in ICT. TL are associated to a specific research group but other groups may also participate in specific tasks included in the TL. Currently, ICT has eight Thematic Lines:

• Environmental Monitoring and Remediation
• Strategic Metals in the Portuguese Variscan Metallogenic Belt
• Lithospheric Dynamics
• Active Tectonics and Seismic Hazard
